A single dad who was faced with devastating news that his 15-year-old daughter had inherited a rare, life threatening disease and decided to fight back – not only for his daughter but for the 5,000 to 6,000 kids nationwide who are facing the horrible effects of this disease.

A freshman at Bishop Chatard High School,Jazmyne Harris was recently diagnosed as havingFriedreich’s ataxia – a severely debilitating, life-shortening, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder which is inherited at birth. Painfully aware of the lack of funding for Friedreich’s ataxia research, Jazmyne’s father, Virgil Harris, founded Jumpin’ for Jazz, Inc. a non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of children suffering from Friedreich’s ataxia, ensuring quality care for all and empowering research organizations to find the cure.

After learning of Jazmyne’s diagnosis, the local Indianapolis community has embraced Virgil and has donated time and resources to help him champion this cause.

Most recently, FOX 59 reporter, Sherman Burdette, featured Jazmyne, Virgil and the Jumpin’ for Jazz organization in his “Paying it Forward” segment that runs on Monday mornings.
